Typesetting explained

What is typesetting?

Typesetting, also known as DTP (desktop publishing), is the process of arranging translated text within a layout, ready for print or digital publication.

Translated text can expand or shrink considerably compared with the original, and every language follows its own rules for punctuation, hyphenation, spacing and font usage. There's no single standard way to set out every language – you have to know the rules for each one.

FAQs

Typesetting FAQs

Answers to the questions we’re asked most about language typesetting and DTP.

Here at Planet Languages, we only use experienced foreign-language typesetters.

Most of our clients send us their artwork in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator, although we can work with almost any typesetting tool.

As we work with experienced foreign-language typesetters, we can help with DTP services for any language needed.

Yes, we most certainly can. PDFs come in various forms, from content created in tools such as Adobe InDesign or Canva to scanned documents. If you just need the translation back as a Word document, we can extract the text and provide the translation in Word format - ideally from a PDF with selectable text, though we’ll use OCR tools if the content is non-editable, such as images or scanned files.

If you’d like the translated content back in the same format as the original PDF, we’ll need the full InDesign package to organise the typesetting (DTP) of the content.

Crop marks show the printer where to trim the document to its finished size. Bleed is the extra area that extends beyond the trim line. This allowance compensates for slight variations during trimming and prevents unwanted white edges on the finished page.

A print-ready PDF is prepared to meet your printer’s specifications, with the appropriate image resolution, colour settings, font embedding, crop marks and bleed. A digital PDF is optimised for on-screen use and can include features such as hyperlinks, bookmarks and interactive elements. We can provide either format, depending on how your document will be used.

We prepare each PDF for its intended use. For print, we provide a print-ready file that meets your printer’s technical requirements. For digital use, we can optimise the document for on-screen viewing and include hyperlinks, bookmarks or interactive elements where required. We can also create accessible PDFs with the structure needed to support users of assistive technologies.

No, typesetting and translation are two different services. However, if we typeset content that we haven't translated, we'll assume it's approved and won't carry out any further linguistic checks before delivery.
